I came up with this line recently to answer the question "how is this art?"
My line: ArtistFishbowl is NOT art, it's a promotional event that explores symbiotic relationships between business and art. I'm an artist, that's all I know. This project shows ME off, also the host location, also the people and events I feature.
I have to call it art because I don't know how else to approach it. Yes, this is a popularist medium that I'm working in, but it's art I'd say. It's art like DJing is art or like a talk show host is an artist or an independent film maker or documentarian or cartoonist. I'm not making objects, I'm not performing with my body or with my voice per se, but I'm reflecting on situations and interacting.
I do all these things and it benefits the host sponsor to house me in their place of business. They let me do my thing. They have to give me a certain amount of freedom and usually my biggest time for creativity is at night when no one's there. Though during the day, while others are around, that's when I film and interact and the community becomes my material to work with.
Social networking, social media, social connection is the area I deal in. I can't do this in a vacuum. It takes all kinds; it takes a village. These windows are my only home and I need people to feed me.
