My motivation for painting in this box is to make a job for myself. I put this glass box together a few days ago, now I have to paint in it, so I've come here to make an oil painting of water. I'm kind of between studios right now so it was practical for me to use this time to paint. This box is the most comfortable studio I've ever had.
The idea has been in the back of my mind for a year or so but it all started in '99. It rolled around my head in different forms but the River School's Crosscircle festival has allowed me the perfect chance to bring this project into being, even the glass was already here waiting for me to assemble it.
The painting I'm working on today is from a series of water paintings that I began about a year ago. This painting is number two in the series. You can see the reference photo hanging above my head. I'm using a photo that I took of this same river, the Trukee. The first water painting in the series was done from a photo of water at Walker Lake. The one I'm working on now will eventually look exactly like the photo.
I'm hoping to understand how to paint water eventually.
